Located on North Freeman Avenue in Luverne, the Hinkly House is a beautifully preserved and accurately restored Victorian period home.  It was presented to the Rock County Historical Society in April 1959 by heirs of the R. B. Hinkly family. The modified Queen Anne home with 12 rooms, 2 bathrooms and a story-high attic, was built in 1892. The home is built of Sioux quartzite from R. B. Hinkly’s Blue Mound Quarry.  R. B. Hinkly was a visionary and the house was built for the time when electricity and plumbing would be available. A unique feature is the tunnel in the basement which connects to a “cellar” in the backyard where dynamite for a quarry was stored.

The careful restoration of the Hinkly House has made it a must-see for people interested in the early history of Luverne.  One gets a feeling for what a splendid showcase this was in the 1890s. The restoration includes wallpaper made to match the original designs and the ceilings mimic the originals.
