Founding & History of Steen, MN

Steen, a city in Clinton township, was platted in the summer of 1888 but it was 1942 before it became  incorporated. Steen started as a station on the Illinois Central railroad connecting Sioux Falls with Chicago.  The brothers John P. Steen and Ole P. Steen homesteaded the land which would become Steen. The original name considered was Virginia but later became Steen in honor of the two homesteaders.  

In 1888 the post office was established in the furniture store of  C. C. Clemetson who became postmaster. A school was built in 1905.  Early Steen has two churches, the German Evangelical and German Lutheran.

Steen today is primarily a residential community with a population of 180 in the 2010 census.  The post office closed in 2011. The school closed in the late 1950s with the students now attending Hills.  Steen is home to one church, The Reformed Church of Steen.
