Drake was established as the second station on the branch road of the Sioux City & St. Paul railway from Worthington to Sioux Falls in 1876.  The station was named after the Hon. E. F. Drake, the president of the company, and was located near a large farm owned by him near the Nobles county line.  Drake’s existence came to an end when it was determined that the land was not suitable for a railroad sidetrack. Drake was slowly replaced by a town to the west, Magnolia.

Bruce was established as a station on Illinois Central railroad in 1887.  The first name proposed for the station was Martin but that was soon changed to Bruce, in honor of one of the chief officials of the Illinois Central.  Bruce was platted in 1888 and a building boom commenced. In 1890 another railroad, the Sioux City & Northern, was built in Rock County and intersected with the Illinois Central two miles to the east of Bruce.  Most merchants moved to the town located at the intersection, Hills.

Carnegie, also known as West Jasper, was the part of the current city of Jasper that laid in Rock County.  When the Willmar & Sioux Falls railroad came through the northwest part of Rock County, two proposed towns were laid out in the adjacent counties of Rock and Pipestone.  Eventually all the businesses were built in Jasper. In 1889 the two towns were incorporated as the city of Jasper, which straddles Rock and Pipestone counties.

Manley (originally known as Hornick) was envisioned to be a town at the intersection of the Sioux City & Northern railroad with the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha railroad.  Manley was named in honor of W.P. Manley, a leading stockholder in the Sioux City & Northern railroad. A few businesses were built in the 1890 but eventually closed.

Warner, also called Hill Siding, in section 7 Magnolia township was a grain station on the Worthington-Mitchell branch of the Omaha railroad.  A town never developed.

Country post offices existed before the towns and villages developed.  All these post offices disappeared when the towns in the county came into existence.  Denver post office was in the residence of H. Goodale, in section 10, Denver township. Handy post office was on the east line of Kanaranzi township.  Martin post office in Martin county had John D. Tyler as the first postmaster. Clinton post office, later called Kongsberg, was in Clinton township.  Meadow post office was in eastern Rose Dell township.  Pleasant Valley post office existed only a few years before patrons got their mail in Luverne.

None of these towns are in existence today although Manley and Bruce are found on some maps.   Carnegie or West Jasper is now part of Jasper.
